CHT tense as JSS, UPDF cross swords

Dec 4: A tense situation was prevailing in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) following the violence in Dighinala on Tuesday in which a cadre of hardline tribal outfit UPDF was killed. Locals fear eruption of fresh armed conflicts between the two rival political organisations ? Parbatta Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (JSS) and United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) at any time.

The CHT people are passing their days in panic. At least three persons were killed in bloody clashes between the two rival groups last month.

A leader of UPDF was shot dead allegedly by the armed cadres of the JSS on December 1 in Babuchhara Bazar area under Dighinala upazila in the district. Two others including Dhruba Jyoti Chakma, coordinator of UPDF of Chittagong metropolitan, were injured in the fighting. They are now under treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital and are stated to be in critical condition.

The UPDF has called a day-long siege programme in Khagrachhari district tomorrow (Friday) demanding immediate arrest the JSS cadres responsible for the killing.

A businessman and activist of JSS was shot dead allegedly by UPDF cadres on November 8 at Panchhari College gate area in the district. One jeep driver Sebabrata Chakma (22) was gunned by the armed cadres of UPDF on his way to attend a programme making the death anniversary of Manabendra Larma on November 10. On the other hand the JSS cadres attacked the house of Praba Chandra Chakma, a former UP member of Bhaibon Chhara union the same day. The miscreants fired at the house of Praba Chandra Chakma indiscriminately but there were no casualties.

The armed cadres of JSS opened blank fire at the Giri Ful area, a UPDF stronghold, under the sadar upazila in the district on November 12. The UPDF cadres killed Dhana Bikash Chakma (24), an activist of JSS and abducted two young men at gunpoint from the Haza Chhara village under Dighinala upazila on November 14.
