Dec 2: The sixth anniversary of the CHT peace treaty was today marked by violence as pro and anti-accord activists locked in a gun fight in Khagrachhari that left a hardline UPDF leader killed and two others injured.
A dawn to dusk road blockade called by Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) was observed in the three districts yesterday demanding "full implementation" of the CHT peace accord.
A gunfight between PCJSS and anti-peace treaty UPDF activists left one person killed and two others injured at Babuchara Bazar in Dighinala in Khagrachhari district. The dead was identified as Gyaneshwar Chakma a local leader of the UPDF. The injured persons ? Dhrubojyoti Chakma and Antar Barua? are also the activists of the hardline tribal organisation.
The injured UPDF activists were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where Gyaneshwar Chakma succumbed to his serious wounds. Condition of the rest two were also stated to be critical.
The UPDF office at Babuchara Bazar was also attacked and set ablaze by its rivals.
No transport plied the roads of Khagrachari during the day-long blockade.
Long distance buses including those of BRTC did not leave the district town.
Pickets were seen active on the roads in different areas of the town but no untoward incident occurred.
Army, police, BDR and ansars were deployed at different sensitive points.
To press home the full implementation of the accord, the PCJSS led by Shantu Larma who is now Chairman of the CHT Regional Council has called for a hartal in the region on December 8.
UNB adds Apart from the gunfight at Dighinala and damage of some vehicles in Panchhari of Khagrachhari district, the road blockade was observed by and large peacefully amidst tight security measures.
Parbatya Gano Parishad which has been demanding scrapping of the peace accord also brought out processions and held rallies in different parts of Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Banderban districts.
The main opposition Awami League, during whose tenure the peace treaty was signed, held a rally in Rangamati in support of the agreement. Former MP Dipankar Talukdar presided over the meeting.
On the other hand, the UPDF that demands full autonomy of the region observed the day as a "black day" for the Jumma people. It also published a list of its supporters killed or injured in the past six years.
Since the peace accord was signed, at least 300 people were killed in clashes between the pro-treaty PCJSS and anti-accord UPDF.
According to official estimate, some 243 people were killed and 382 injured. The official figure shows the number of abducted people by anti-accord armed elements to be 389 while many local people believed the number could be more than 600.
In observing the peace accord day the PCJSS held a rally at Rangamati and demanded its full implementation. PCJSS leader Ushatan Talukdar addressed the meeting with its President Gyanendu Bikash Chakma in the chair.
On the other hand, in capital Dhaka, anti-accord Bengalis held a rally at Muktangan and burnt an effigy of Shantu Larma who had surrendered arms to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, calling off a two-decade bush war.
