Implementation works on various development projects undertaken for socio-economic development and cementing communal harmony in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) are going on in full swing.
The present government has so far taken 36 development projects in the CHT during the last two fiscal, sources of the Ministry for CHT affairs said yesterday.
It said, the projects are being implemented with the financial assistance of Taka 315 from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which are scheduled to be completed by December 2007.
The two important projects: distribution of rations for 12,222 tribal families and 26,000 non-tribal people under the rehabilitation programmes for the members of the Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) and `Guchcha Gram.' Under the rehabilitation programmes around 65,513 tonnes of rice and Taka 1,17,39,000 were distributed during 2001- 2002 fiscal and similar quantities of rice and Taka 1,16,50,000 were distributed during 2002-2003.
Sources said, around Taka 96 crore has been spent for seven projects in the CHT during 2001-2002 while Taka 68 crore was spent in six projects in 2002-2003 fiscal. About 80 percent works of these projects have been completed, it added.
The three hill district councils have recruited 572 teachers for different schools of the CHT during 2002-2003, as per approval of the Prime Minister. Besides, 2,220 `Para Kendra' (ward center) have been set up.
The government has nominated 32 tribal people in reserve- seats in medical and dental colleges, agricultural universities and different technological institutes during 2001-2002 and 2002- 2003 fiscal as per terms in the CHT peace accord.
