CHT women leaders protest atrocities

STAFF REPORTER

Women leaders of three non-government organisations of Chittagong Hill Tracts demanded investigation and immediate punishment to the culprits for raping 10 tribal women and setting fire to about 100 houses at Mohalchhari in Khagrachhari district.

Organising a press conference at the National Press Club jointly by Khagrapur Mohila Kalyan Samity, Milonpur Mohila Samity and Paharika Pragati Sangha, the office bearers of the organisations said that despite passage of about three months, the culprits responsible for the occurrence had not yet been punished or arrested.

Prativa Tripura, chairperson of Paharika Pragati Sangha read out a written statement at the press conference, while Kalasona Chakma, one of the rap victim was also present there.

Criticising the Government for not ensuring security to its people, they said that it was very unfortunate for the nation when members of the law enforcing agencies instigated confrontation between the tribals and the Bengali settlers.

"We want end of the conflict between the tribal and the Bengalee living there for many years," they said adding that without investigating the matter impartially, the problem would not be solved.

It may be mentioned that two persons were killed, and at least 15 others were injured in a clash between the tribals and Bengalees at Mohalchhari on August 26 following abduction of Rupam Mohajan (25), son of Bijoy Mohajan of Shinginala area in Khagrachhari district.

More than 100 dwelling houses were set on fire at Babupara and Thalipara areas in Khagrachhari district during the arson.
