Khagrachhari road blockade ends

UPDF action programme today

UNB, KHAGRACHHARI

Sept 28: A 72-hour road blockade programme called by tribal refugees ended today (Sunday) through announcing another similar programme for next month (in October) to press for the implementation of a 22-point demand including reintroduction of ration system.

Bharat Protyagato Jumma Sharanarthi Kalyan Samity?a body of tribal refugees who returned from India?had enforced the road blockade on September 26 disrupting transport movement on all roads in the district. JSS, UPDF and its front organisations expressed solidarity with the programme.

During the road blockade programme, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the district but the action disrupted life of the local people and stranded hundreds of vehicles at Ramgarh.

Members of the Samity also staged a protest march and held a meeting in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office today (Sunday) where they indicated the next round of road blockade programme would be launched on October 11.

Meanwhile, United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) has called a road blockade and work stoppage programme in Mahalchhari Upazila beginning tomorrow (Monday) to press for the formation of a judicial committee to inquire a recent fire incident.

Prottay Chakma of UPDF, in a statement today (Sunday), said the government is trying to suppress the incident of arson by avoiding to form a judicial inquiry committee.

Late last month (August), the entire Mahalchhari village was raged by a fire allegedly set by a gang of terrorists over a dispute between tribesmen and Bengali settlers.
