UNB, SHERPUR
Sept 27 : Work on "Modhutila Eco Park", an amusement park and bio-diversity protection centre, is going on in full swing. Environment and Forest Ministry is implementing the project at the foot of Garo hill in Nalitabari upazila with an involvement of Tk 164.24 lakh.
Local Government Engineering Department is executing physical infrastructure development work while the Forest Department supervising the work of afforestation.
Work on constructing the main road and internal roads, four spillways for artificial lake, one rest house, one forester office cum bungalow, barrack and toilets are on.
According to an LGED source, 95 percent work of the main and internal roads and four spillways have been completed. The department has already spent Tk 68.78 lakh, out of 115.70 lakh.
The source hoped that the project would be completed by June 2004.

Note from Japan CHT Committee: This eco-park project has faced repeated protests by the Bangladesh Adibashi Forum and Mandi (Garo) Community. Traditional use of the lands by the indigenous communities is threatened by the project.
