The parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts
(CHT) Affairs yesterday decided to find the reasons behind the law and order
slide in the CHT.
Expressing deep concern at the situation, the committee meeting at the Jatiya
Sangsad Bhaban decided to review the peace accord and recommend amendments to
the provisions, if necessary. It also decided to investigate irregularities
in project implementation in the region.
The committee earlier planned to visit the CHT. It will also prepare a report
on the CHT and submit it to the government with its recommendations, Mohammad
Mosharraf Hossain, chairman of the committee, told The Daily Star yesterday.
Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, a member of the committee, directed it to work on improving the law and order in the area when Hossain met her Saturday at the Prime Minister's Office.
Hossain presided over the meeting while committee members Moni Swapan Dewan,
Shajahan chowdhury, Gazi Mohammad Shajahan, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Mostafa
Kamal Pasha, Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan and other officials attended the meeting. However,
the prime minister could not attend the meeting.
