47 held for suspected link with clash at Khagrachhari

A total of 47 Bangalees, including their local leader Dr Prodip, have so far been arrested for their suspected involvement in Tuesday's clash with the indigenous people at Mahalchhari upazila under Khagrachhari district.

According to an ISPR press release yesterday, another 10 indigenous miscreants were arrested with arms in connection with the incident.


Army and police patrols have been intensified in the area, the press release said.


Chief of the General Staff of Bangladesh Army Major General S M Ekramul Haque and Area Commander of Chittagong Zone Major General Moyeen U Ahmed visited the places of occurrence on Wednesday.


They talked to the affected people and asserted that legal action would be taken against the persons involved in the incident. They also distributed food and clothes among the victims, the press release said.


Meanwhile, arrangements have been made to provide temporary housing as well as treatment for the affected people by the local army. Besides, each affected tribal family was given Tk 2,000.


Earlier, local Member of Parliament and Chairman of Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board Wadud Bhuiyan visited the area and assured the affected people of justice, the press release said.
