NIS Reunion an Auspicious Success!

The inaugural NIS Reunion in Carmichael, California was held August 5th, 2001 at the Third Culture Enterprises cafeteria on Marshall Avenue. With 100% participation of known Nagoya International School alumni in Carmichael, the successful get-together is considered to be the most heavily attended (as a percentage of local alumni) NIS reunion yet.*

After the obligatory jiko shokai, a toast for the safety of residents living on Umetatechi #23 where debris from the old Nanzan middle school campus is buried was offered by Reverend Ishikawa Osamu of Holy Sage Youchien before the assembled guests dug into a scrumptious banquet of stir-fried chicken, coyote squash and cabbage on genmai. During the meal telegrams were read from those who couldn't attend, including a greeting from Professor Yokoi Uzuragoromo, holder of the Sugita Chair in International Relations at Hosorembo University.

"For a long time, I had been confused about the difference between baja shoujiki and baka shoujiki," said bakalexicographer David Olson ('70). "It was good to interact with other NISers who often have information on the oddest things. As it turns out, baja shoujiki is a type of genuine spirit found only in Lower California. I'm sincerely grateful for the neta."

"This just goes to show that we NISers have a lot to learn from each other," said Joel Ingulsrud ('80), who organized the event. Ingulsrud hopes to have another NIS reunion in Carmichael as soon as possible, probably tomorrow morning. "It's important to stay in touch with your past and having an NIS alumnus rent an apartment in my house has helped a lot."

Other NIS alumni interested in attending future reunions in Carmichael should send inquiries to nisreunion@thirdculture.com.

* The recent "official" NIS reunion in Nagoya was also deemed a success but failed to gain the participation of local Nagoyan Andy Vorland.
